The undercarriage Sprocket, sprocket wheel, or chain wheel is at the rear of the track frame. It is installed on the driving wheel of the equipment and runs between the chain links of the excavator or bulldozer. It is only used to drive the chain and does not bear weight.

They can be found in-between the links of the track of the excavator or bulldozer. This undercarriage part can also be found over the bushing that connects the two links of a track to each other. The sprocket is only used to drive the track and is installed around the drive of the machine.

A good rule of thumb with rubber track diggers is to replace sprockets on every other rubber change. Considering this could be over 1,500 hours, it is recommended to do an inspection just to head off any premature problems with track failure.

The drive sprocket is attached the final drive motor (aka, track drive) so that when the drive motor turns the sprocket also turns.

Rental machines will have tracks last in the 800- to 1,200-hour range. Some severe-duty applications that are more abusive to tracks may get less than 800 hours. Contractors performing only earthwork might see track life in the 1,600- to 2,000-hour range.

A bigger rear sprocket/ smaller front sprocket will give you an increase in acceleration but decrease your top speed. A smaller rear sprocket/bigger front sprocket will reduce you acceleration but increase the top speed.

Determine the number of teeth of the small sprocket. The number of teeth for the large sprocket is determined by multiplying the number of teeth for the small sprocket by the speed ratio. More than 15 teeth on the small sprocket is recommended. The number of teeth on the large sprocket should be less than 120.

Calculating the sprocket ratio.This is the number of teeth on the driving sprocket divided by the number of teeth on the driven sprocket. For example, a front sprocket on has 20 teeth and the rear sprocket has 60, the sprocket ratio is 20/60 = 1/3 = 1:3 or 3.
